Postpartum Affirmations for New Mamas

As I sat with my feelings 10 days postpartum, so many thoughts and emotions were swirling around in my head.

I am 43 years old and I just gave birth to my second daughter.

To be honest, I never thought all of this would be possible. I have recovered from addiction and abuse and spent years becoming the person I am. My life- and my body - are not perfect. Except, actually, they are.

I strongly believe everything in life happens exactly when and how it is meant to. Every struggle, ever stretch mark, every mountain I have climbed, every challenge I have accepted has led me here.

Your story is probably different than mine in many ways. It is your own, and it is a powerful story! You are the heroine and the triumph is all yours.

In the days after you bring new life into the world, I want to share some very important affirmations for you. I always like to remind my mama friends that it is okay to feel what you’re feelings in the days, weeks and months postpartum. In a world that emphasizes “snapping back”, I want to encourage you to fully anchor yourself in appreciation for your body, your soul and your amazing spirit as a new mom. Whether you just had your first baby or you gave birth to another little one, your emotions are valid and important!

About Affirmations and Anchoring:

When I am using affirmations, I prefer to use an essential oil to anchor my mind and my heart in that intention. You might be wondering, why would I choose to do this?

Anchoring is when you use a smell to remind yourself of an experience or emotion. For example, certain smells may remind you of positive memories of your childhood! A certain perfume remind you of your grandmother, or the smell of wood chips may remind you of your grandfather. Aroma- and the effect it has on the olfactory system - is a very strong reminder for your brain of feelings you once felt.

When you use an essential oil during mindfulness practice, you are creating a feeling- and then you get to use that oil again and again to remind yourself of how you felt at that time. So while I might say my affirmations to myself in the mirror of my bathroom at home, I can grab that same essential oil on the go and inhale it to evoke that feeling in myself during the day. Isn’t that amazing?!

For new mamas, I recommend doTERRA Neroli essential oil.

Grab a bottle of Neroli oil and roll several drops of the oil onto your palm.

Gently massage the Neroli into your heart as you say the following affirmations to yourself every day:

My body is beautiful, amazing, strong, powerful, sexy, safe, resilient, and loved.

It made and birthed my babies.

It carries me through life.

It heals itself.

It gives nourishment.

It feels pleasure.

My body is a gift!

Repeat this daily. When you say these words to yourself, I want you to take the time to truly mean the words you’re saying. Deeply inhale the aroma of the Neroli oil. Think about the moments during your pregnancy that you felt resilient and strong. Remember that your body created your children and all that they are, and thank it for this beautiful work.

Remind yourself of the times during birth that you were powerful like a warrior. Inhale and connect with that strength within yourself!

And then - this is very important - remind yourself that your personhood is truly valuable. You had feeling, thoughts and dreams before your baby - and you get to just BE yourself! You are deserving of dreams, goals, pleasure, healing, nourishment and LOVE.
