Postpartum Hormone Balancing with Essential Oils

In the days after I gave birth to my daughter Olivia, my hormones were shifting rapidly.

This is totally normal. In fact, I like to remind my mom friends that feeling “not normal” is okay and perhaps the most “normal” thing when you’re a new mom!

It’s okay to feel what you’re feeling.

A few days after giving birth, many women go through a "Baby Blues" stage when tears flow like water. After both of my daughters were born, I noticed that around day 3 or 4 (as my milk came in), I literally cried about every little thing!

This can be easily explained by hormones. During pregnancy, a woman’s progesterone levels can increase by 200%. This is a feel-good hormone and can make you feel really happy. It’s that emotional “high” during your pregnancy when you feel like everything is new and exciting. But this progesterone level drops suddenly after the placenta is birthed. This “dropping” happens so that your milk production can begin. This shift is one of the reasons you transition from feeling really high and elated to suddenly crying about every little thing!

There is a cascade of other hormone reactions that happen and this is all normal. In fact, one of the reasons you begin crying is actually to release excess fluid, to expel the extra hormones out of your body from your pregnancy. So sweating and drinking extra water are also helpful. Our birthing bodies are so amazing!

Essential oils are a great support tool during postpartum time and they can assist the body in natural hormone balance. I use them throughout my monthly cycles too.

The 2 oils I recommend using for hormonal balancing post-birth are doTERRA Jasmine & Clary Sage essential oils. These have helped me balance my hormones successfully after both my pregnancies!

Clary Sage

Apply 2 times a day to your ankles and wrists. You can also put Clary Sage in a diffuser in your home. This is the ultimate woman's oil and helps to balance out your hormones. I recommend having this essential oil on hand if you are a person who gets a monthly cycle! I recommend using this during birth and postpartum but avoid using it during your pregnancy. Save it for after, when it will help your hormones get on track!

Jasmine

Apply Jasmine twice a day to your heart center. This oil also balances hormones and helps with stress reduction. Jasmine also opens your heart to more love. It's great for the skin too so I like to apply it to my face as well!
