Tummy Troubles: Using Essential Oils to Soothe the Stomach

2H4A0449.jpg

My three-year-old was complaining of tummy troubles the other day.

It happens - they eat something that doesn’t quite sit right, or they eat too fast, or they try a new food that doesn’t work for them. Stomach pain can keep kids up at night in discomfort…and of course we’re up with them, wishing we could make it all go away.

I hear it a lot:

“The Tums just aren’t working.”

“What is pepto-bismol anyways?”

“Are these ingredients actually safe to use with my kids?!”

I’m so thrilled to share my natural, nontoxic solutions with you. Empowerment is all about knowing what to reach for when you need it the most!

Thank heavens for essential oils! I literally do not know how life would be without them. I use oils for life’s little emergencies, and tummy troubles are no match for the effectiveness of doTERRA essential oils.

I want to share my favorite oil solutions for tummy troubles with you below. New to oils and want a sample? Reach out to me and I’ll send you a care package and teach you how to use them!

For Tummyaches: DigestZen and Tamer blends

These are parent must-haves!

I love both of these blends by doTERRA that were created to help with digestion.

Tamer blend was created specifically with children in mind. It’s made with Spearmint, Japanese Peppermint, Ginger, Black Pepper, and Parsley Seed in a base of Fractionated Coconut Oil. It’s a bit gentler than DigestZen blend and the aroma is a little sweeter. Spearmint has long been studied for its ability to settle the stomach! I use this roller with my little ones by rolling the blend onto their belly and also into the bottoms of their feet. You can do this every 20 minutes or until the problem subsides! Usually for my kids it works either the 1st or the 2nd time.

DigestZen blend was originally created for adults, but doTERRA has released it in this roll-on bottle which has been diluted with coconut oil to deliver gentler relief for children, elders and individuals with sensitive skin. We call it DigestZen Touch, because it’s so easy to roll onto the skin and use on the go for kids! DigestZen is created with the essential oils of Anise, Peppermint, Ginger, Caraway, Coriander, Tarragon, and Fennel (all known for their ability to ease the effects of motion sickness and stomach upset when inhaled or applied topically.) DigestZen has a stronger aroma than Tamer but it’s a fantastic roll-on for people of all ages! I use it myself for efficient relief when I overeat. Like Tamer, roll it ont the belly and the bottoms of the feet every 20 minutes until the stomach is soothed.

Both of these roll-on blends are favorites of mine as a parent. I recommend that you have one (or both) in your diaper bag or purse always!

For Colicky Babies: Tamer and Roman Chamomile

Colicky babies are no joke!

If you are a parent with a baby who has colic, get Tamer blend asap and I would also suggest this trick I used for my own babe!

When my daughter Olivia had colic, I reached for Tamer blend because I know how amazing it is for little babies. But I also instinctively reached for Roman Chamomile essential oil. This oil is ultra-soothing for the body and our emotions. Roman chamomile is also anti-spasmodic and specifically very helpful for colic!

I mixed together 1 drop of Roman Chamomile (doTERRA oils are strong so just 1 drop is effective!) with about 4-5 drops of Tamer blend and gently massaged it into Olivia’s tummy. She stopped crying, her muscles relaxed and I could tell she was feeling so much better.

For Older Kids & Adults: DigestZen Blend

For myself and for older kids, I recommend this little trick!

Pour 1-2 drops of doTERRA DigestZen blend into a glass and fill the rest with water. Drink up! You can do this whenever something isn’t sitting right.

Sometimes I do this after a meal even if I feel good just to help my body digest my food. I love the taste and it’s super effective!

For my 3-year-old, I sometimes put 1 drop in a glass of plant milk (oat milk is a favorite) and give it to her to drink. 1 single drop is plenty and helps her feel much better.

This is not only helpful for an upset stomach, but I also use this to ease constipation and bloating.

You can also massage DigestZen right into your belly topically with a little bit of coconut oil! I love this blend and I can’t imagine my life without it.
