Essential Oils for Hair Growth and Shine

I love using essential oils in my hair! I use them to support natural growth, shine, strength, and of course a beautiful aroma. Here are some of my favorite essential oils for healthy hair.

Use this guide to decide which essential oils you should incorporate into your haircare regimen…

💧Take a few drops and massage directly into the scalp:

💧 Add to shampoo or in your apple cider vinegar rinse:

💧Make a spritz

Pour your essential oils into a glass spray bottle and fill the rest with 8 oz of distilled water. I also suggest adding a pinch of salt in the bottom of the spray bottle if you want texture in your hair.

💧 Make a Rice Protein Rinse:

I adapted this recipe from Holistic Enchilada and I recommend using your Doterra oils in your rinse! A rice protein rinse can help support your hair’s growth which is perfect to do as the seasons change, if you color treat your hair, or if you frequently use heat tools. Here’s how!

  1. Rinse your rice with water

  2. Put rice in a pot and add double the amount of water.

  3. Set out for 24 hours to ferment.

  4. Strain out the cloudy water and put it in a bowl or cup.

  5. After the rice water has fermented 24 hours, add your fave essential oil (if in doubt, use Lavender and Cedarwood) and then pour the rice water onto your hair while catching it with another cup or bowl underneath OR dip the length of your hair into the bowl of rice water and scrunch your hair gently towards the scalp.

  6. Repeat this a few times until you feel like all of your hair has absorbed enough of the rice water or when you run out of rice water.

  7. You can wait a few minutes or rinse off right away. I suggest allowing it to sit for 5-10 minutes for best results.

  8. Deep condition and continue with the rest of your routine.

💧 Make an All-natural Flax Hair Gel:

I adapted this recipe from PureWow and of course, I incorporated my essential oils. As you make the recipe, keep in mind that the amount of flaxseeds you use can affect the gel’s thickness and ability to hold. The more flaxseeds you add to your recipe, the stronger the hold will be. The author on PureWow explains that if you are looking for a softer hold, you should use more distilled water in your mixture.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of distilled water

  • 1/4 cup of flaxseeds

  • Fine mesh strainer, cheesecloth or stocking

  • Empty glass jar with a lid

  • Aloe vera (optional)

  • Essential oils, such as Rosemary or Lavender

How to make:

  1. Put the water and the flaxseeds in a small pot and bring them to a slow boil. To prevent the seeds from sticking to the bottom of the pot, make sure to stir the mixture regularly.

  2. After boiling it for 10 minutes, check the consistency. You’ll notice the mixture beginning to thicken into a soft, gel-like substance. You may also notice some foam forming at the top (this is normal). Make sure that the mixture is not too watery or thin.

  3. Turn off the heat and let it cool for about half an hour. The longer you let it sit, the thicker the consistency will be.

  4. Once it’s cool enough and you have the desired consistency, grab your jar and prepare your strainer. If you find that the mixture is too thick to filter, gradually add water and mix it in until it’s more manageable.

  5. Filter your mixture through the strainer and into your glass jar or container. You can use your hands to squeeze the gel out and separate it from the seeds. Keep in mind that you won’t get it all out on the first try—it’ll definitely take multiple passes to get it all.

  6. Mix in some aloe vera and your Doterra essential oils for extra moisture and natural benefits.

  7. After thoroughly mixing in your added ingredients, feel free to start using your gel right away. To store, simply cover your container and keep it in the refrigerator for up to three weeks.
